As a mother of two sons, Sadarian and Nathaniel Jr., and grandmother of five—Kamari, Jaylan, Aleya, Alanah, and Londyn—I have always cherished family. In March 2020, when schools closed due to the pandemic, I found myself sitting in my prayer room, recovering from a challenging financial situation. It was during this quiet moment that I felt the Holy Spirit speak to me: "Feed the children."
At first, I laughed, wondering how I could fulfill such a request with only $13 in my pocket. But then, I received a clear vision: hot dogs, chips, a sweet treat, and a drink. Trusting God's plan, I went along with it. The very next day, a friend called and offered me 74 hot dogs and buns. Soon after, I received money from someone who owed me, which allowed me to buy the rest of the items needed. With the help of friends—Charlotte, Teresa, and Teresa's daughter, Kayla, and sister April—we set up right in my driveway and served 74 children.
Word quickly spread, and our local newspaper published an article about our efforts. Donations began pouring in from the community, and what started as a simple act of faith grew into something far greater. From March to August 2020, we fed over 5,100 children and adults.
This experience was the most fulfilling moment of my life. Volunteers from all walks of life came together to contribute their time and resources. I decided to name this movement The Village Community, with the slogan “Love is what love does,” because love is an action word.
Since then, I have been honored with numerous awards and featured on various news outlets for our community work. But more than accolades, The Village Community has given me purpose. After 15 years of service in law enforcement and running my business, Topsy’s, I discovered through The Village Community that my true calling is to serve others.
The Village Community isn’t just about providing physical nourishment—it feeds the spirit. We host events during the pandemic, holidays, and natural disasters, offering food, prayer, and community. My journey with The Village Community has been deeply transformative, and I often say that I didn’t just create The Village—The Village Community helped me find myself.
We are here to uplift one another, offering a hand-up, not just a hand-out.
